The program includes a solid foundation in research, curriculum, and teaching skills with an emphasis in instructional design, and educational technology.

Notes

It is expected that all students graduating from the Instructional Technology program at Texas Tech will become critical users of the new instructional technologies through a process of reflective analysis. This process includes, but is not restricted to, such practices as:

a) guided research

b) annotated bibliographies of the research literature,

c) guided group discussion,

d) term projects,

e) class presentations, and

f) the implementation of innovative software design or technologies.

Reflective analysis provides the participant the opportunity to critically engage the current knowledge base in an atmosphere of colleagues and support. Additionally, the student will play a major role in the implementation of traditional and innovative technologies by conducting appropriate analysis within a wide range of professional responsibilities.

Program Goals, Objectives, and Competencies The overall goals and objectives of the Educational Instructional Technology program at Texas Tech University embrace the revised definition of instructional technology endorsed by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

Instructional technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of processes and resources for learning.

Previous definitions and terminology were heavily rooted in the media of the times. The exponential growth of technology over the last 20 years, as well as the shift in the field to a stronger focus on learning strategies and theories is reflected in the 1994 definition developed by Seels and Richey. The goals for students in EDIT revolve around the following six broad areas of Instructional Technology.

1. Theories and models of instructional design;

2. Development of instructional materials through a variety of technologies based on theories and models of instructional design;

3. Utilization of processes and resources to promote learning;

4. Management of technologies, resources and development for instructional purposes;

5. Evaluation of programs, projects, and materials; and

6. Critical analysis of research, trends and issues related to the field of instructional technology.

While defined as six separate goals, these categories do not exist in isolation. A student taking a course with a heavy focus on any one goal would be exploring and utilizing knowledge and skills related to the other five categories.
