The Language, Diversity & Literacy Studies concentration in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is designed to create scholars ine the areas of Bilingual and ESL Education and Language and Literacy Studies who are critically committed to empowering and advocating for linguistically and culturally diverse communities of learners. Graduates of this program will experience collaborative and innovative research that leads to knowledge and understanding of diverse learners. Graduates will have the ability to shape and impact policies, and embrace critical pedagogies for 21st century global learners.
Students in the concentration may select a strand in Language & Literacy or Bilingual/ESL Education. In consultation with their advisors, students in the Bilingual/ESL strand may be able to incorporate some Language & Literacy coursework into their degree plan and conversely, those in Language and Literacy may also be able to incorporate Bilingual and ESL courses into their programs of study
The Bilingual and ESL Education strand is a high-demand and highly specialized area with a shortage of professional in the field. It prepares professionals as teacher educators, researchers, curriculum specialists, policy makers, and as leaders and advocates for the education of linguistically and culturally diverse learners. This program will also prepare professionals to impact K-12 and university level instruction, government, corporations, and local, state, national, and global communities.
Students will have opportunities to engage in coursework and practical teaching and research experiences that address heritage and target languages, issues of diversity, language policies, second language methodologies, research methods, international experiences, and new technologies in educational reform. This strand will also prepare students to add supplemental certifications in Bilingual and ESL Education to their initial certification.

Students in the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction program study in one of four concentrations:
- Curriculum Studies/Teacher Education
- Language, Diversity & Literacy Studies
- Physical Education and Sports Science
- STEM Education
The degree requirements are designed so students will:
- Become independent researchers in at least one concentration and one research paradigm.
- Understand qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Devleop the ability to communicate research to a broad range of audiences (e.g., researchers, school board members, or the general public).
- Refine their knowledge, skills and dispositions to teach a diverse spectrum of students and enable others to teach the same spectrum of students.
- Further develop their ability to use traditional and emerging technology when instructing others face to face adn at a distance and in conducting research.
- Be able to apply, synthesize and evaluate curriculum and instruction theory.
- Demonstrate mastery of content, pedagogical content knowledge and instructional practices in their field of study.

- You receive an eraider login( via the email you gave in your graduate school application) and activate your login.
- Graduate School receives your information.
- You apply to the TTU College of Education for the degree you are applying for using your eraider login.
- The Graduate School processes your application and sends a worksheet to the College of Education requesting approval for admittance from the degree program.
- You provide all materials required for the College of Education program to make its decision.
- Your College of Education application is locked and no new materials or editing can occur.
- Faculty in that program review your application and application materials.
- The program's faculty makes their decision about your application.
- The Graduate School's worksheet is returned with the program's recommendation.
